Because they didn't start of with 5/7 and 4/5 of the same amount of money. They started with different amounts of money so the fractions will be different
= 1 - 5/7 = 2/7
Fraction of $ that Mrs Lee had left
= 1 - 4/5 = 1/5
Since they had same amount of money left, we can say that they have the same units left. So we make the numerator the same.
1/5 = 2/10
From this we see that Mdm Tan has 7 units at first, and Mrs Lee has 10 units at first. And in the end, each had 2 units left.
Difference of their money at first = 10 units - 7 units = 3 units
3 units = $546
1 unit = $546 ÷ 3 = $182
$ that Mdm Tan had at first
= 7 units
= $182 x 7
= $1274
$ Mrs Lee had left
= 2 units
= $182 x 2
= $364
