The approach is a backwards approach to the usual polynomial question. Try solving the polynomial which you have formed. You will realise that the solutions are 1, 3 and k2.

When something is divided by x - 1, we sub in x = 2. When something is divided by x + 5, we sub in x = -5. When something is divided by x, we sub in x = 0, since dividing by x is the same as dividing by x - 0.
