To be fair, this question is not much of a trigonometry question. It’s almost purely a proportion question. Has you school gone through the inputting of sin, cos and tan into the calculator?
yes.
If you put tan 30 directly into the calculator, you will not obtain a nice number. The square of it, however, is a nice number 1/3.
Note that (tan 30)^2 = (tan 30) x (tan 30) and not tan (30 x 30) which has a different meaning altogether.
Similar ideas apply for tan 60. This will be seen again in Sec 3 or Sec 4 A Maths if you are taking A Maths next year.
