The cos n# I am not sure since it can be 1 or -1 and nothing else seems to suggest that the terms cancel out. What is the original question given leading to that solution?

The author seems to assume that cos n# = 1 in both the times that cos n# appears the solution, even though this is only true if n is an even number.
