If the bar is attracted to one pole of magnet, it suggests that it's a magnetic material or a magnet.

In order to confirm that it's a magnet, the bar will have to repel one of the poles of the magnet.

So diagram C which shows the magnet being pushed away (repelled) would confirm it. Answers 1 and 2 do not contain C so they aren't correct.

We are left with answers 3 and 4. Now we compare Diagram B and D.

In diagram C we see that X is repelled by Z. So this means W would be attracted to Z.
Diagram B shows this so it's correct.

Therefore 3 is the answer since. it contains Diagram B and C .


Note that Diagram D would be wrong . Since X is repelled by Z, then W would be repelled by Y. But Diagram D shows that it's attracted instead.

Only magnets will exhibit this repelling property, so we are certain that the two objects are magnets. Attraction does not necessarily mean that the two objects are magnets, though it is possible.
