Nine equilateral triangles can stack themselves in such a 5-3-1 fashion to form another giant equilateral triangle.

Total area of the biggest triangle (with base 15 cm and height 12 cm)
= 0.5 x 15 x 12
= 90 cm2

Since there are 9 identical equilateral triangles, each one measures 90 / 9 = 10 cm2.

Total area of shaded triangles
= 3 x 10
= 30 cm2
