I managed to answer this qn using model-drawing and fractions. The answer is 32.
As this is a 2-mark qn, is there a shorter way?

Drawing model is the way to go here.

2 marks seem to be a little too low.

Hi Dalila, non model method using constant total concept takes less than 30 sec to solve, so 2 marks seems reasonable.
------------- J - - - - M - - - Total
At 1st - -- 4U---- 8U*---12U
Change---(1U)-- +1U
After-------- 3U - - - (this means M = 9U
------------------------- and M at first = 8U*
Total = 12U.
So after M gives to J, each will have 6U.

J : 6U - 3U = 3U
3U = 12
8U = 32.

I can't seem to align the ratios with blank spaces so i resorted to using dashes.
