There are 4 small circles of diameter 8 cm each. So the large circle has a diameter of 4 x 8 = 32 cm.

This means that each small circle has radius 4 cm while the large circle has radius 16 cm.

Formula for circle is # x radius x radius if you have not already learnt it yet.

Area of big circle is # x 16 x 16 = # x 256.

Area of one small circle is # x 4 x 4 = # x 16.

Area of four small circles is # x 16 x 4 = # x 64.

Area of shaded
= # x 256 - # x 64
= # x 192
