Can use
Let number of people = u
3u + 42 = 8u - 47
5u = 89
1u = 89/5
But the answer for this question no valid. Question wrong.... ;(

Because he hands out 5 more pencils to each pupil, the situation goes from 42 pencils extra to 47 pencils not enough. This is a difference of 89 pencils in quantity.

The extra 89 pencils decide how many students there are in the class.

Number of students = 89/5
= “17.8”

Other than the fact that the question seems flawed, this is the technique to solve such questions.
