It should be 1 + 6 + 5.

The part of R that doesn't overlap with P and Q is 5u, not 3u.

1:2:3
5:10:15
Shaded part 4u
Left 1:6:5
Why 5 is because 4 shared (shaded area), 6 shared with Q. So added up 4+6+5=15

Is it because Q is 10u so
Ratio
1 2 3
X5
------------
5 10 15

Yes. Refer to tutor AC's answer above.

The idea here is that you let Q be 10u first. Then since 40% of Q is shaded, 4u is the shaded area.

Since ratio of P : Q : R = 1 : 2 : 3, if Q = 10u,
then multiply the ratio by 5 to make Q 10u

1 : 2 : 3 = 5 : 10 : 15

Hi Nicole, think your teacher made a mistake. The last +15 should be a +3 (as written in red in your diagram) since the rectangles are overlapping. 15 unit is the TOTAL area of Rectangle R, NOT the unshaded part.

15u - 4u = 11u, not 9u. And therefore it's a +5 instead of +3
