Working backwards will be the best method. Note that Tom and Jerry have 160 in total and at the end of the question we know that tom has 1/4 of the total sum, we can work out what tom have at the end and this gave us a hint that working backwards is what this question is about.
do take note that when working back works we will need to take 1 - fraction to work out what tom and jerry have after they gave away their share
