The first step in doing this question is to identify the charges on X and Y.

Since X has lost two electrons, its charge is 2+. Since Y has gained one electron, its charge is 1-.

To counteract the 2+ charge, we need a 2- charge. But Y only has a charge of 1-, so we need two of Y to balance out the charges in one of X.

So the formula is XY2.
