I am a bit confused with the second part so I am not sure if my answer is correct. I assume that you need to find the area of the square which contains the circular part (cut out from the square) for the cylinder.

The total surface area of the cylinder contains two circles and a ‘rectangle’ (which is just the curved surface of the cylinder). But the area of materials needed comes from two squares (NOT two circles) and the same rectangle.
In other words, we need to find the total area of the squares and the rectangle, even though there will be a ‘left-over’ unused part of the materials.
