Realise that the horizontal parts of the perimeter on either side of the figure (top and bottom) add up to 3 sides of a square.
Another way to solve this :
First, find out the total perimeter of these squares if they are not joined together.
Then, observe the figure. Find out how many sides of a square are being blocked from the outside (the sides that do not form the perimeter)
Subtract the sum of the from the total perimeter
