From observing the diagram, we can deduce that the length of one side of square ABCD = 3 x length of the small triangles

We can cut ABCD into 9 smaller squares first.
Then, we can further cut each square into 2 small triangles.

So that a total of 18 small triangles.
You will notice that 11 of them are shaded. The fraction is 11/18
