Find a common factor both numbers of the ratio. Divide by that number.

Repeat step 1 until the only common factor you can find is 1. That's when you get the simplest ratio.

Example

40 : 35

40 can be divided by 5. 35 also can be divided by 5.

40 ÷ 5 = 8
35 ÷ 5 = 7

8 and 7 have only 1 as the common factor.

So simplest ratio is 8:7

Another example :

32 : 8

32 and 8 both can be divided by 2.

32 ÷ 2 = 16
8 ÷ 2 = 4

16 and 4 and also be divided by 2.

16 ÷ 2 = 8
4 ÷ 2 = 2

8 and 2 also can be divided by 2.

8 ÷ 2 = 4
2 ÷ 2 = 1

Now, only 1 is the common factor of 4 and 1.

So 4 : 1 is your simplest ratio

Or

Both 32 and 8 can be divided by 8

32 ÷ 8 = 4
8 ÷ 8 = 1
