Hi Sonia! Each integral represents the area under the curve.

When we integrate a curve with respect to x, the definite integral represents the area under the curve to the x-axis.

When we integrate a curve with respect to y, the definite integral represents the area under the curve to the y-axis.

These two integrals measure the areas which I have shaded, and they add up to a rectangle.

Even if we do not know the equation of the curve, we know that these two regions combine to form a rectangle with sides 4 and 3.

Hence, the total area is 12, so the value of the sum of the integrals is 12.
