Work backwards.
12 beads + 5 beads = 17 beads
17 beads = ½ of remainder
So remainder = 17 x 2 = 34 beads
34 beads + 2 beads = 36 beads
After giving 1/5 to Tricia, 4/5 of the beads are left.
So 36 beads is 4/5 of total.
1/5 = 36 ÷ 4 = 9
Total = 9 x 5 = 45
