Notice that 1/2 = 2/4
So let Tina's share be 4u
if she gives ½ to Mary, she gives her 2u
Mary + 2u
Tina = 4u - 2u = 2u
Difference = Mary = $48
If Tina gives ¼ to Mary, she gives her 1u
Mary + 1u
Tina = 4u - 1u = 3u
Difference = Mary - 2u = $28
$48 - $28 = $20
So this tells us that 2u = $20
Try drawing the model. You will realise that 2u = $20
1u = $20 ÷ 2 = $10
Tina's share = 4u = 4 x $10 = $40
(Note : from above, we can also deduce that Mary = $48)
