If you haven't learnt algebra yet, as in Primary 6 then you will learn it(as of last year), then you can use ratio way to solve this question too. :) (my correction tape happened to run out now, pardon the cancellings) if you understand the algebra way, then you can use it in Primary 5 too :)

Can do model drawing ?

It would be quite hard to do by model drawing as you would have to take 3/4 of what John has, which is 7 units, and you can't show this in the model as 7 cannot be divided by 4 (then times 3 after that).. And if you draw the model from the ratio that you have gotten in my working which is 8:28:21, you would have to draw so many parts and you don't need to as you can just minus the number of units between John and Mary to find how many units are equal to 39..
