Lots of techniques are involved. Usage of identities, expansion of brackets, factorisation of brackets, usage of identities and so on. It takes practice to solve these questions.

In (a), clearly we have to expand the brackets fully first by your regular special expansions. We then have to use identity, because we know that tan2 is related to sec2.

In (b), we cannot use the three identities since there are no square terms, so we will have to convert everything into sines and cosines.

These questions require practice.

In some cases you must expand. In some cases you must factorise. In some cases you must combine into single fraction. There is no hard and fast rule on the best method to use. Each identity question can use any of these approaches to do, so you must be proficient in the techniques.

When I look at the identities, the first thing I do is to see whether there are any squares (to use identities), any fractions (to eventually simplify), any plus in between (if there is a plus, we must kill it by using identities) and so on.

Sometimes there are different methods, but then some are longer than others.

It’s like a maze. There can be more than one way to get to the end, or you lose your way in circles.

One way you can do is to use laptop (or borrow someone’s) to view the questions and answers and then save them onto your laptop.
