not boys = girls + adults = 24
not girls = boys + adults = 20
From this you can see that there are 4 more girls than boys.
40 - 4 = 36
36 ÷ 2 = 18
There are 18 boys.
Since boys + adults = 20,
Adults = 20 - 18 = 2
total number of guests
= 40 children + 2 adults
= 42
Method 2 :
not boys = girls + adults = 24
not girls = boys + adults = 20
So boys + girls + 2 x adults = 24 + 20
= 44
since boys + girls = 40,
2 x adults = 44 - 40 = 4
Adults = 4 ÷ 2 = 2
Total guests = 2 adults + 40 children
= 42
