Let number of kaya and red beans buns sold be 1u each.

Since ½ of red bean buns are left, ½ were sold.
½ of red bean buns = 1u
So total number of red bean buns = 2u

Since ¾ of kaya buns are left, ¼ was sold.
¼ of kaya buns = 1u
So total kaya buns = 4u

Total number of buns left = 3u + 1u = 4u
4u = 72
1u = 72 ÷ 4 = 18

Number of red beans at first = 2u
= 2 x 18
= 36
