when the switch is opened, the electric current does not flow through the base and the base is no longer magnetised. Hence, there would not be a magnetic force of repulsion acting on the figure from the base.

(b)
When the figure is made of a lighter material, the force of gravity acting (downwards) on the figure is smaller/reduced. Since the base provides the same magnetic force of repulsion (upwards) as before, the figure is able to float at a greater height as magnetic force becomes smaller at a greater distance from the base.
