We let the ratio at first be in terms of units
and the ratio in the end be in terms of parts.

At first →Adult : children = 3 units : 4 units
In the end →Adult : children = 3 parts : 2 parts

Adults : 3 units + 18 = 3 parts
So 1 unit + 6 = 1 part

Children : 4 units - 36 = 2 parts

Since we know 1 unit + 6 = 1 part,

4 units - 36 = 2 x (1 unit + 6)
4 units - 36 = 2 units + 12
2 units = 48
1 unit = 24

Number of adults at first
= 3 units
= 3 x 24
= 72
