Alternative way :

Since the digit in the thousands and the tens place is the same , the value of the digit in the thousands place is 100 times that of the value of the digit in the tens place.

So you can see it as

Value of digit in the thousands place = 100u

Value of digit in the tens place = 1u

Difference = 99u

99u = 3960

1u = 3960 ÷ 99 = 40

Since 1u = 40, the value in the tens place is 40. So the value in the thousands place is 4000.

This tells you that the digit is 4.

Answer is 4.

Method:
Substitute the number by trial and error.
A and B are the same digits.

Substitute the digit 4 into both A and B, then the value will be 4000 and 40.

4000 - 40 = 3960.
