Drawing model will help a lot. The key is that after Josh gives away one quarter (1u), he will be left with 3 units. May now has 3 times as much as Josh. Hence, 9 units.

From here, May gave Josh 12 marbles such that they have the same number of marbles. Since the total number of marbles are 3+9=12 units, they must end up with 6 units each in the end, which means May gave away 9-6=3 units of marbles.
