Terence had 3/8 as much as his brother James, draw the model for this first.
Terence then spent 1/6 of his money. Hence, divide the 3 units into 6 units, which can be done by splitting each unit into 2.
Do the same to James' units.
Now inclusive of what they spent, Terence has 6 units whereas James has 16 units.

(After spending)
Terence, who is left with 5units has half as much as James. Therefore, James has 10 units left.
James has spent (16-10)units, which is 6 units.
This is how you derive to 7 units = $35, as both brothers spent $35 in total.
