Assume Mary already bought 6 pears and has $1 left. If she wants to buy 2 more to have a total of 8 pears, her $1 is not enough. She needs $1.40 more.

$1 + $1.40 = $2.40

So $2.40 = cost of 2 pears
1 pear = $2.40 ÷ 2 = $1.20

Money Mary has = amount of money that can buy 6 pears + $1

= $1.20 x 6 + $1
= $7.20 + $1
= $8.20
