Now, E has the point (3, k).

Do you realise that the x-coordinate of E is the same as the x-coordinate of C? This means that E is either directly below or directly above C. In other words, CE is a 'vertical' line.

The horizontal height of the triangle formed is simply the difference in the y-values of B and C, which is 3 - (-1) = 4.

The formula for area of a triangle is 0.5 x base x height. Since the area is given as 14 units2,

0.5 x base x 4 = 14
base = 7

This means that the base, or the length CE, is 7 units long. So E must either be 7 units below C or 7 units above C.

This means that the y-coordinate of E can be 7 less or 7 more than the y-coordinate of C (which is -1).

So, k can be -1 + 7 = 6 or -1 - 7 = -8.
