2x - y = 3

See that -y there? Make it the same as the -3y in the other equation.

Multiply by 3,

6x - 3y = 9

We know that 7x - 3y = 13

So 7x - 3y - (6x - 3y) = 13 - 9

Notice the 3y cancels out. And 7x - 6x = x

So you're left with x = 4

Now, substitute x = 4 back into any of the equations to solve for y

Eg. 2x - y = 3

So y = 2x - 3

y = 2(4) - 3 = 5

Notice how 'y' gets 'eliminated' in the subtraction of two equations, hence the name 'elimination method'.
