I have listed down the first twenty perfect squares and the first ten perfect cubes for your reference.

To round off numbers to the nearest perfect square, we must round off a number to one of the nearest numbers in the list. For example, in the first question, 160 is closer to 169 than 144, so we round 160 off to 169 before performingthe square root.

To estimate a number is to first round off numbers to a figure which is easier to calculate before we make calculations. The use of estimates is for easy computation mentally without the need for calculators. This is in contrast to rounding off at the end which you would normally do in questions.

Estimates can be useful in making calculations. For example, if the price of an item is $9.99 and you wish to buy 1001 of such items and you wish to roughly have an idea of how much the total cost is, estimating $9.99 as $10 and 1001 as 1000 makes computations easier, since 10 x 1000 is much easier than 9.99 x 1001. The difference in values is extremely small, but estimates often save computational time.
