Calvin started to save 1 week earlier than Dave. Means he saved for 7 days before Dave started.

$7 x 7 = $49

So when Dave started, he had $49 more than Dave.

From having $49 more to $59 less,

$49 + $59 = $108

So from the day Dave started, he had to save $108 more than Calvin in the same period, in order to have $59 more than Calvin overall.

Every day, Dave saves $3 more Calvin

$108 ÷ 3 = 36

So Dave has to save for 36 days.

Amount Calvin saved = 36 x $7 + $49
= $252 + $49
= $301

Check :
amount Dave saved in 36 days = 36 x $10 = $360

$360 - $301 = $59
