Or should it be:
24+12+8=44
4units=44
1 unit=11
X at first: 11+24
=35
24+12+8=44
4units=44

X at first: 11+24
=35
X has 24 more than Y at first. After removing 8 fr Y and adding 12 to X, difference increases to 24 + 8 + 12 = 44. Therefore 4 units (after difference) = 44. X at first = 5U - 12.
For your final answer you need to add 8 since 1U is the no. in Y AFTER removing 8 ie Y at first = 1U + 8.
