I don't understand this the denominator and the nominator

First, it's neumerator and denominator.

There are 6 squares in total. If you are asked to shade 2/3 of it.

You will have to convert 2/3 to 4/6 by multiplying both the numerator and denominator by 2.

So out of the 6 squares, you need to shade 4 of them which is the answer.
