Each of them took 2 pencils.

So number of boys + girls = 5 + 3 = 8

Number of pencils they took altogether
= 8 x 2 = 16

Now since 5 + 3 = 8,

8 x 2 = (5 + 3) x 2

OR

Number of pencils boys took
= 5 x 2
Number of pencils girls took
= 3 x 2

Number of pencils they took altogether
= 5 x 2 + 3 x 2
= (5 + 3) x 2

Since there were 4 pencils left, total number of pencils is just (5 + 3) x 2 + 4
