Let X represent the number of pens Samantha sold.
Then, the number of pens Ben sold was 4X.

The number of pens Samantha had left was X + 72.

The number of pens Ben had left was 0.5X + 36.

We know that X + 4X + (X + 72) + (0.5X + 36) = 433.

Rearrange:

6.5X + 108 = 433

6.5X = 325

Simplify:

X = 50

Hence, the number of pens Samantha sold was 50.

The number of pens Ben had at the start was 4X + (0.5X + 36) = 4.5X + 36 = 261.
