Let A be the number of apples in the basket at first.
Then, the total number of fruits in the basket at first will be 5A.
When 40 apples are added in the basket, the ratio (A + 40) : (5A + 40) is 3 : 10.
Therefore, 10 (A + 40) = 3 (5A + 40).
10A + 400 = 15A + 120
5A = 280
A = 56

The number of apples in the basket at first was 56.
