Do help. Stucked for 30mins on this
Ray → 3 parts
Dan spent ¼ → 1 part
Amount Dan has left = 3 parts
Ray spent ⅔ → 2 parts
Amount Ray has left = 1 parts
Dan's 3 parts = 2 x Ray's 1 part
= Ray's 2 parts
Since they are the same amount, we make the parts the same.
Dan's 3 parts x 2 = 6
Ray's 2 parts x 3 = 6
So Dan has 6 parts left.
Since that is twice of what Ray has left,
Ray has 6 ÷ 2 = 3 parts left
Amount Dan had at first = 4 parts x 2
= 8 parts
Amount Ray has at first = 3 parts x 3 = 9 parts.
Total = 9 + 8 = 17 parts
17 parts = $340
1 part = $340 ÷ 17 = $20
Amount Dan had left
= 6 parts
= $20 x 6
= $120
Dan has ¾ of his money left after spending.
Ray has ⅓ of his money left after spending.
Dan's ¾ = 2 x ⅓ of Ray's
Dan's ¾ = ⅔ Ray's
Now, since they are equal, the idea is to make the numerator the same.
¾ → 6/8
⅔ → 6/9
So you can see that Dan has 8 units and Ray has 9 units at first.
