Show you one example.

1a) 16,18

Idea is to break the numbers down into their prime factors.

16 ÷ 2 = 8
8 ÷ 2 = 4
4 ÷ 2 = 2
2 ÷ 2 = 1

So 16 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 2⁴

18 ÷ 2 = 9
9 ÷ 3 = 3
3 ÷ 3 = 1

So 18 = 2 x 3 x 3 = 2 x 3²

The lowest common multiple must have prime factors from both numbers. If both numbers have the same prime factor, we take the prime factor with the higher power.

You can see that 16 contains 2⁴, but 18 contains a 2 only. So we take 2⁴.

18 has 3² but 16 has no prime factor 3. So we include 3².

LCM = 3² x 2⁴ = 9 x 16 = 144
