Is my child's working correct? I did it via algebra but if I work it backwards, it does not make sense.

Total seashells the girls have=124
Equal no. of seashells the girls have at first=124/2
=62

How can Shulin lose 87 seashells if she only has 62 seashells to start with?

The error is with the first working. You have to change the negative sign for both to positive sign. This is because 3x & x is what they have in the end so when you add 25 & 87 respectively, these expression should equal one another.Your claim is wrong..124 is the total they have in the end and not at first.Hope this clarifies the doubt here.

Thank you so much! I was trying to understand the "positive expressions" and after looking at your "checking workings". I understood what you meant already. Thank you again! Now, to explain to my child using their "before and after" concept instead.

By the way, algebra skills are not tested in pri 5 qns yet so approaching the qn with models will help.Your child will understand the use of algebra in Pri 6.The models is correct here.

Thank you for sharing this aspect. My child does not go for tuition. We try to guide him ourselves but seems like using non algebra methods is becoming a challenge for us parents instead.

Yes I understand. It is really nerve-wrecking to understand models myself back in pri school.I use algebra most of the time. It's only now i began to realise that models come from fractions and ratio. It syncs well with these two.Do raise any qn pertaining to models.I'll try my best to help out.

Grateful thanks for your helping hand. You are spot on about the nerve wrecking part as we are trying our best to refrain from sending him for tuition. I will definitely ask again if I can't figure it out. Thank you!
