We proceed by defining the sum and product of the two roots of the equation based on the given equation.

Completing the square techniques are sometimes used. This helps us transform (a2 + b2) into a form that utilises (a + b) and ab without having to solve for a and b individually.

Sum of roots = negative coefficient of the X term/ coef of X^2 term
Product of roots= X^0 term/ coef of X^2 term

When faced with problems like "i cant remember the formula for a^2 + b^2", just expand the whole thing out. You know they want a a^2 term, so expand (a+b)^2, if they want a^3, (a+b)^3 and so on.

I'm not sure if this is what you wanted, but sure hope this helps :)
