At first,

Tim = Lenny + $180

Let Tim's money be 4 units.

So 4u = Lenny + $180

And thus Lenny = 4u - $180

After giving 1/4 of his money to Lenny (which is 1u)

Tim = 4u - 1u = 3u

So Lenny now has 4u - $180 + 1u
= 5u - $180

And since Lenny now has $170 more than Tim,

5u - $180 = 3u + $170

2u = $350
1u = $175

Lenny's money at first is just 4u - $180, which you can find already.

Alternatively,

notice the total sum of money doesn't change.

Tim's $ at first = Lenny's $ at first + $180

In order for Lenny to have $170 more than Tim, Tim must give Lenny $175.

Tim's $ now
= Lenny's $ at first + $180 - $175
= Lenny's $ at first + $5

Lenny's $ now
= Lenny's $ at first + $175

(Notice that the difference between their new amounts now is $170)

Since $175 is 1/4 of Tim's money at first, you can now figure out Lenny's amount of money at first.

Take note of the unit that moved up next to Lenny's bar.

Based on deduction , Lenny has $180 less than Tim at first and after receiving 1 unit from Tim, she had $170 (smaller than $180) more than Tim, so the $180 difference should not be more than 2 units.

Hope the model drawing helps.
