These functions are known as piece-wise functions. They are not defined by only one equation, but two or more equations for different values of x.

In (e), for example, g(x) = 2x when x is a negative number and 1 - 3x otherwise. So when the value of x chosen ls a negative number like -5, g(x) acts like 2x, giving 2 (-5) = -10 as the answer. When the value of x chosen is zero or positive, g(x) acts like 1 - 3x.

Similar argument applies for (f).

It's something similar to "I must work for 8 hours a day to be paid at a rate of $7 per hour; any less and I will not be paid my salary at all".
