Fossil fuels are used as fuels involving combustion (well, vehicles require fuel for energy for kinetic movement). So fuels are useful for its energy release from combustion processes. This is more likely to be chemical than physical in nature, since the release of energy comes associated with a change in the bonds within the fossil fuel molecules.
