g(x) is a function and g(*) is just the function g(x) using '*' as its value.
This question is a matter of using * to replace a number, like what algebra does.
If we use numbers, g(1) = 3(1)^2 - 5 which equals to -2.
If we use algebra,
g(a) = 3(a)^2 - 5
g(b) = 3(b)^2 - 5
And therefore, explains why we have the first step.

Hope this helps
