24 is a common multiple of 3 and 8 (Denominators of the fractions). Therefore, the number each of them had at first: 24 units for Nick and 24 units + 150 for Max.

Hope this helps. For question on this concept, it will be easier to draw model that reflect more than/ less than first before indicating the units and values in it.
