Basically it goes lke this.

In the past, the number of girls is 36/100 that of the total number of people.
--> total number of people is 100/36 that of the girls.

After that, the number of girls is 24/100 that of the total number of people.
--> new total number of people is 100/24 = 150/36 that of the girls.

But number of girls remain unchanged in both cases and the number 36 is unchanged in both cases, so we can say that the girls take up 36 units, the old number of people takes up 100 units and the new number of people takes up 150 units.

So there is an increase in the number of people from 100 units to 150 units; this is a 50% increase which corresponds to the 125 extra people.

So 100% corresponds to 250 and 150% corresponds to 375, which means that there are originally 250 people and the population size grows to 375.

Number of girls is then 36% x 250 (or 24% x 375) = 90.
