By finding out the general term alone, you can find It's figure or square units easily and this works with all qn that has a pattern (n-1)..Hope it helps..

From 1+ 4( n-1)
Why (n-1)?

Hmm..My explanation may not be 100% accurate but I'll try anyways..Why is it n-1? Well,(n-1) is just an expression and when you add it to the first (figure) term,1 in this case, you'll get a formula that represent all figures that is to come after the first figure..This helps to find the value of any figure and beyond..The n is actually the figure..So when you substitute any figure to n,the value of any figure is determined right away...Only add k(n-1) where k is the constant value if there is a constant increase in every figure..For example, increase of 4,multiply 4 with (n-1) and add the first figure's random value as well..Hope I answered your qn..:)

The normal way to find your nth term formula rather than using a calculator(another shortcut)..Call this magic (or whatever you like)..Hope it helps.. :)

May I know for 2 layer patterns where 2nd row is constant, how do we solve it?

Ok...I take back my word...Just ignore the 3 layer pattern as it's not tested in Pri or Sec..I don't think I have done the third one before..but in Sec level, you'll be expose to various patterns but more on quadratics..By the way,2 layer pattern is actually quadratic..I'm not sure if 2 layer is tested for you but I do have a shortcut for it..Will send it to you shortly..
