Fig 1 : 1 square
Fig 2 : 3 squares = 1 + 2
Fig 3 : 6 squares = 1 + 2 + 3
Fig 4 : 10 squares = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4
Fig 5 : 15 squares = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5

So for figure 100 ,

Number of squares = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ....
+ 96 + 97 + 98 + 99 + 100


Notice that :
1 + 100 = 101
2 + 99 = 101
3 + 98 = 101
4 + 97 = 101

and so on.


Try to work it out yourself from here. Find out how many sets of 101s there are.

Then find the total to get your answer.
